The Last three months have absolutely been the most difficult time in my life. I can't sleep tonight as memories flood my thoughts. And while I struggle inside, trying to wrap my head around why I am going through this experience, and why it is still very much so consuming my life, I am baffled and amazed in the same moment.

Trials they say, are given to you to work through, to refine you, and though I know I  feel many times that I cannot handle what I am given, I do trust that It is all for the greater good. My life experience, shall I say.

When I am honest with myself,  I realize that it has been the Strength, Faith and determination of my family and my husband that has gotten me through this.  Maybe I shouldn't say through this...I'm definitely still in the thick  of it. But I feel so honored to have those close to me there to rally around me, lift me up, and constantly encourage me. Without their support I would have lost all faith.

There is memory I will never forget though, about a week and a half after my surgery, my parents had gone back to Hawaii, Tim was back to long shifts at work, and I was alone.. for the first time. Oh how alone I felt.
shuffling around the house, walker in tow, when I walked (slowly) to the kitchen to heat up some lunch that was already prepared, waiting in my Refrigerator.

I slowly pulled the door open, everything seemed so taxing and I felt so weak. I got it in the microwave, and realized that I had No clean forks in the drawer, I had a dozen of them someone had washed for me in the dishwasher, but this is where it got pathetic...

I opened the dishwasher and let the door fall down, Since I could not simply bend over and grab the fork I started to get really overwhelmed since the dishwasher is so low to the floor and I am so tall. I began cursing these dang legs, if I weren't so tall then this would be so much easier...

I beat myself up so bad, assuring the sick me, that I was worthless! I wasn't useful anymore, I couldn't do anything around my house, I couldn't even go down the stairs to check on my business. I had lost my independence, my spunk, my energy, heck even my ability to shower myself. You get the point. I was in a bad place.

The pain was so intense I couldn't even will my body into doing such an easy task. I slowly, carefully started lowering myself down, lower and lower to the ground, clinging to the counter and cupboards. And what would have to taken two seconds took minutes..

I got that fork, but I felt so defeated and miserable, I couldn't even find it in me to pull myself back  up. I layed on my side, on my kitchen floor for at least ten minutes, sobbing as gently as possible, my incision spasming with every breath..And I remember hearing the microwave beeping at me over and over, beckoning me to snap out of it! I was so angry at that fork I couldn't even give it the satisfaction of being eaten from. Instead I got back into bed, leaving the lasagna in the microwave.

Needless to say, I lost twelve pounds that first couple weeks. That experience will always be vivid in my mind. At that moment I was defeated, I had nothing left to fight. So through these last couple of months when I am having really hard days with the pain, I remember that not too long ago I was a helpless hopeless woman sobbing on her kitchen floor. And somehow I'm able to see just how far I've come.

I know this is long, but I feel like I need this written for myself so I can look back on it someday and remember this time in my life.

Maybe what I am learning through this is that it isn't so much that I need to endure, or be strong, But that I need to be appreciative. Our bodies are fragile yet amazing, and we need to love ourselves and be grateful for our bodies.

They are the vessel in which we are experiencing this earthly existence! What a blessing it is to even have the
opportunity to receive a body. In fact It is the reason we all chose to come to this earth. So when I get really depressed I try to remind myself "You chose this. You knew the pain you'd go through, and it was worth it."
So though my body is not perfect, it is a gift from God. And I am trying to be nicer to it.

I have spent the past three years cursing my body" My dang back is so stupid, I can't do the things I want to or need to do!" And now I have come to realize all of the many amazing things that my body does allow me to do. And maybe I realized that ONLY after all of it was taken from me.

Really amazing post Jess! I think you will find that you will be glad you wrote it down. In a few years from now you will be glad that you did. I have felt so utterly in despair before. Emptiness consuming me. Discouraged beyond belief. Not with a physical trial such as yours. (although I do realize you are not just enduring a physical trial here. It is very much emotional and spiritual as well. Mercy! To be hit on all sides such as you are experiencing! I can only imagine!!) Anyway, to look back on it and reflect really does help to put things into perspective. I know you are discouraged with how slowly your recovery seems to be moving. But just think of the girl on the flor cursing the fork and the girl now! :) Oh how I wish I was a better help to you!! I feel sad that I let the "not too sure what to do" frame of mind guide me. Carrie, just be a DO-er! Anyway, I can say, I am truly grateful for those empty, discouraged, DEFEATED feelings I have had. I remember them perfectly and at times spring with tears remembering the feelings of it all. I see it as a blessing that I can so easily recall those emotions. It's the whole "you don't know how good you have it until you realized how much you didn't" kind of thing... well, I am having a hard time explaining myself here. Sorry for the novel! I just know that you will be able to say with conviction that you are glad for the experience. It may take a few years, but I believe you will! :) (Not the experience of the physical pain...but the experience of struggling thru a trial victorious!) I love the reminder you gave me in this post about this is my life. I chose it. Life is taxing and more difficult than I imagined when I was all of 13 and just wanted to grow up! I truly, TRULY believe the pay off will be so worth it! just like that 13 year old didn't know how hard it would be, this 31 year old can only imagine how glorious of what is to come will be! i just hope I can get to a glorious place, seriously. Your post provoked many thoughts in me. I better zip it now. ;) Thanks! I love ya Jess!

Jess that made me cry my eyes out just now! Even though it may have been for you to look back on it really helped me today! You are amazing! I love you!

Oh Jess! I hope you start feeling better each day. One thing that President Utchdorf said that I think changes the way I think of this is this:
"It is your response to adversity, not the adversity itself that will determine how your life story will develop". Not that I have gone through the same physical pain that you have, but it helps me everyday with the little things.

Jess,
I am so sorry for this pain and trial in your life, most people do not have to endure this type of thing. If there is anything that we can ever do, please let me know.

Wow. I'd rather birth like 10 more kids than go through what you have had to endure. haha. you are amazing.

but for reals - you know, I think you made an EXCELLENT point about how our bodies aren't perfect. I have had 2 kids. and it's had quite the toll on my body. it's just not the same. and I see cute sexy girls walkin' around and I find myself wishing I didn't have 150+ stretch marks on my tummy, nursing boobs, or a mom bum. I know it's not the same as what you are dealing with, but you are right - we need to remember that our bodies are a gift. thanks for that reminder.

good luck. your post is beautiful.

ps- did you ever end up watching all those movies that someone brought to you? like The Village? ha.

Oh Jess. It kills me that I couldn't be there for you to hand you that stinkin' fork. I know it's been an excuriciating few months (years really) but it's amazing how strong we can be when we have to be. I love you so much, see you soon.

I think every woman needs to read your post! We all have very hard days & look at ourselves wishing for something else sometimes. Your faith & wisdom has truly grown through this trial. You are inspiring & I sure love you. That's what hard times has done for me too, I've learned I just can't do it all myself. I have to give in and take help from others & rely on the Lord. I'm praying for you to have more of those good days and they will come. I wish I were closer but know that I'm thinking of you often & am here anytime. Talk to you soon Jess. love, Meg
